Japanese Plant Maintenance came from American Prevention Maintenance in 1951, and then was introduced Productive Maintenance from the America . 1950s can be called as the era of Prevention Maintenance and 1960s can be called as the era of Productive Maintenance.
Since Japan advocated TPM in 1971, it can be noticed from the graph below that TPM has rapidly promoted from 1980.Most TPM Award winners in 1970s are manufacturing, such as car industry and then it goes to plant concentrated industry from 1980s; now it has already spread to all kinds of industries. Companies all over the world, such as in Asia, Europe, South America, North America , has also started to implement TPM.
What is TPM?
Aims to create a culture and environment that constantly tires to maximize the effectiveness of the entire production system through improvement or “Kaizen”
Uses a hands-on approach to build a “Zero Accident, Zero Defect, Zero Breakdown” system designed to pre-empt losses of all types throughout the life cycle of the production system.
Besides manufacture department, Research, Business, Management departments are also included .
Involves everyone at every level of the organization, from top management to front-line employees.
Uses overlapping small-group activities to attain the target of Zero Losses.
The goal of TPM is that 「 Improving company constitution by improving man's condition and plant constitution 」 .In other words, TPM is used to improve plant constitution with the hope that plants can be performed in highest efficiency and then LCC design can be materialized.
Moreover, while improving man's condition, operators can learn independent maintenance ability; maintenance staff can learn professional maintaining skills and technical staff can have the ability to design a plant, which needs no maintenance. It is the goal of enterprise that improving man's condition and plant constitution would bring the improvement of company constitution. In other words, if every lose in workplace need to be reduced, plant and man's constitution has to be changed.
Even in Administration, R&D, Business departments, constitution of organization, functionality and workers can be improved to achieve the goal of improving company constitution.
